Point guard Damon Stoudamire is a free man and could be of interest to the Boston Celtics.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Boston is one of the teams likely interested Stoudamire, who said the Celtics would be “dumb” not to consider him.

The Memphis Grizzlies have bought out Stoudamire. The terms have not been disclosed, but Stoudamire was guaranteed $2.1 million this year and $2.3 next season, not including bonus money.

Boston, Phoenix and Toronto are all teams that could be in the market for the 5-foot-10 inch, 171-pounder that will be an unrestricted free agent Wednesday after clearing waivers.

“The Boston situation speaks for itself,” Stoudamire told the Globe. “Great record, three superstars, best record in the NBA. If I would get into a situation like that, I would only hope to help and enhance it. Great coaching, great coaching staff..

“I’m comfortable with a situation where they are comfortable with me coming in. I’m not going to be a hindrance. There are places where guys fit and don’t fit. I’m going to fit. No selfish motives. If Boston wants to speak to me, I’d be dumb not to look into the situation.”

Stoudamire suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2005-06, his first year in Memphis. He turned in 2006-07 and played 62 games and average 7.5 points and 4.8 assists. This year, he’s averaged 7.3 points and 3.9 assists was a captain with the Grizzlies. Memphis has decided to give point guards Mike Conley and Juan Carlos Navarro more action. So Stoudamire has not played since late December.

Stoudamire says he’d have not problem backing up Rajon Rondo in Boston. The Celtics can not comment on Stoudamire until he officially becomes a free agent.

Patriots

There has been a Tom Brady sighting – just not at practice.

The Boston Herald has reported that the Patriots quaterback was spotted outside his home in Back Bay on Saturday. He walked outside briefly to speak to police officers that were providing security to the area.

The good news is that Brady was walking without the famed boot. The bad news is that he was walking with a noticeable limp.

The Herald described Brady’s saunter as a “gingerly shuffle of about 10 yards”.

Brady has not been seen during practice all week during the portion in which media are allowed access. The record-making QB, who boasts three Super Bowl rings already, was spotted last week making a bootleg move into his supermodel girlfriend’s apartment in New York.

Red Sox

Boston’s Kevin Youkilis is the only Red Sox left that remains eligible for arbitration. The Gold Glove winning first baseman made $424,500 last year. He has requested $3.7 million, but the team has offered $2,525,000.

A year ago, Boston and Youkilis could not agree on salary. The club renewed him at $424,500. The Sox have not gone to arbitration since Theo Epstein became GM. The team came close with Wily Mo Pena last spring but a deal was struck just hours before the deadline.

This winter, 110 players were eligible for salary arbitration and 48 have exchanged numbers with their clubs. The figures last year were 106 players filing and 56 that exchanged numbers. Only seven players went to a hearing. The teams won four of those hearings, making it 11 straight years that the teams have won the majority of the rulings.

Speaking of Youkilis, the Sox are looking for a lefty off the bench that could help spell Mike Lowell at third and/or Youkilis at first. The Sox are apparently concerned that because of his style of play, Youkilis tends to wear out late in the year.

Some of the names tossed about are familiar ones, including Sean Casey, Tony Clark, Doug Mientkiewicz, Mark Sweeney and Eric Hinski.

The favorite seems to be Brad Wilkerson, the former Expo and Ranger. Boston would prefer a player that can play a corner infield spot and protect either Youkilis and/or Lowell in the lineup. Wilkerson might have options for better money and a longer deal elsewhere.

There are also lefthanded-hitting outfielders like Trot Nixon, Shawn Green, Luis Gonzalez, Ryan Klesko that could draw interest.

If you have any money left after making your Super Bowl ticket purchase and travel arrangements, Red Sox single game tickets went on sale Saturday.

They can be purchased by telephone (617-484-4SOX) or the internet (redsox.com). Fans with disabilities should call (877-REDSOX-9) and hearing-impaired fans can call (617) 226-6644.

Bruins

The Boston Globe reported that Bruins center Patrice Bergeron could be done for the season.

Bergeron, who has not played since being drilled into the boards by Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Randy Jones on Oct. 27, recently took off for an island vacation at the urging of Bruins management.

“I don’t think he will be back this season,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said.

“I hope he’s back. He wants to be back…but at the same time, we don’t want any pressure on him. So we told him, ‘Hey, head off to the islands.'”

Bergeron, 22, suffered a Grade 3 concussion and has been slowly trying to work his way back. If he is done for the season, Boston could use the balance of his $5 million salary in a trade before the Feb. 26 trade deadline.
