LEWISTON – Lewiston Adult Education is accepting registrations for an array of classes designed to promote fitness, wellness and healthy living.

“Healthy Skin, Healthy You” will teach students how look and feel their best by addressing their own unique skin care needs. The one-night course at Cassiel’s Day Spa will include a kit with more than $40 in hair and skin care products selected for each individual student.

Several dance classes lasting six to eight weeks will be offered to help keep residents active. “Ballroom Basics,” “Just Jazz for Beginners,” “Greek Dancing for Families” and “Latin Dance for Beginners and Intermediates” will be available to anyone looking for ways to boost energy and stay fit.

“Parent/Teen Self-Defense Intensive” will bring together parents and teens (age 14+) to explore ways to prevent, avoid and respond to violence. The one-day interactive class is designed to raise awareness and teach verbal and physical skills to counter harassment, assault and abuse.

“CPR, First Aid, AED Training” will continue to be offered at Lewiston Adult Education. Upon completion of the course, students will earn their certification from the American Heart Association in basic CPR, first aid and proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Students may choose to take the course in one seven-and-a-half hour session or in two three-and-a-half hour sessions.

To combat the unhealthy impact of too much stress, Lewiston Adult Education is offering “Relax and Renew.” Over the seven weeks, students will learn natural and holistic approaches, including breathing techniques, light stretching and meditation to reduce stress in their lives.

The Saturday, May 3, “Walking Tour of Lewiston’s Mill District” will begin with a guided tour of Museum L/A and Bates Mill Building 5, then head toward the canal system to learn how imports and exports were moved using waterways and trains. The tour will conclude with a stop at the Maine Heritage Weavers to see how the mill’s weaving techniques are in use today.

Tai chi, a Chinese internal martial art designed to promote overall wellness and increase relaxation, will be offered for 10 weeks through Lewiston Adult Education. The introductory class will focus on the basic movements of tai chi and chi kung.

For residents with chronic lung disease, emphysema or smoker’s lung, Registered Nurse Mary Callahan will teach a one-night course, “Catch Your Breath.” The course will cover how to manage symptoms, avoid complications and live life to the fullest using beneficial breathing techniques and exercises.

“Edible Landscaping” will help residents enjoy eating healthy. The one-night course will cover how to incorporate edible plants in large and small gardens and how to best enjoy the harvest.

For residents who are looking to improve health through weight loss but have been left frustrated by diets, “Weight Loss with Hypnosis” will be available. The four-week course will be taught by a certified hypnotherapist and will teach students how to tune in to their bodies’ true needs: eating when hungry, stopping when satisfied and choosing healthy alternatives, all reinforced through hypnotic suggestion.

Lewiston Adult Education will offer one night of “Herbs for Menopausal Zest,” which will cover how to use herbal remedies to relieve hot flashes, maintain strong bones, provide a good night’s sleep and promote creative zest.

“Understanding and Managing Arthritis” will be instructed by physical therapist Shan Teixeira, owner of Orthopedic and Spine Physical Therapy of L/A. In the one night, Teixeira will give an overview of the common types of arthritis, options for pain management and methods to increase mobility.

Lewiston Adult Education will offer “Introduction to Homeopathy” to teach area residents how to use the 200-year-old system of holistic medicine. The four-week class will cover the philosophy and workings of homeopathy: using information from the patient, typical remedies and how to deal with minor injuries and illnesses such as colds and flu.

Yoga will again be offered to help interested residents improve flexibility and relieve tension. Students will take six weeks to explore the benefits of stretching, elementary yoga positions, breathing and relaxation techniques.
