LEWISTON – The newly organized Lewiston Root Cellar, located at 89 Birch St., is collecting hats, mittens and socks to distribute to people in the neighborhood.

The warm clothing will be collected until Feb. 2 and will be distributed on Feb. 9.

The Lewiston Root Cellar, like its Portland partner, is an interdenominational Christian mission with a goal of uniting churches in the common cause of satisfying the physical and spiritual needs of inner-city youths and their families.

The Root Cellar receives no contributions from state or federal sources. More than 80 percent of its annual support comes from individuals and churches.
