LEWISTON – Ruth Tyler Bean died peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 27.
She was born on Sept. 16, 1911, in Plainville Conn., the daughter of Helen (Styring) and Henry St. John Tyler. She graduated from Plainville High School in 1929, and from Connecticut State College in 1933, with a degree in dietetics.
She was employed as head dietitian at Yale University and at Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown, Conn., until her marriage on Sept. 11, 1937, to Arthur Insley Bean of Springfield, Vt. She made her home in Springfield, Vt., for 66 years.
She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield, serving as church clerk for many years. She was active in University Extension Homemakers, Altrurian, Garden, Quilters and Needlecraft clubs, served as a Girl Scout leader on both the local and state levels and volunteered in the community.
She had a deep intellectual and spiritual life and loved traveling, genealogy, reading and needlework. She was dedicated to her family. As a lifelong learner, she attended Elderhostels every year for 25 years.
In 2002, she moved to Auburn and became part of Schooner Estates retirement community, as well as a member of High Street Congregational Church.
Survivors include her sister, Olive Garrigus of Urbana, Ill.; her sons, Tyler Bean and his wife, Marie, of Orleans, Vt., and Donald Bean and his wife, Karen, of Bethel; her daughters, Mary Bloom and her husband, Stephen, of Falmouth and Emily Tocci and her husband, Gregory, of Orleans, Vt.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Bartlau, Gregory Bean, Sarah Zima, Peter Bloom, Nathan Bean, Matthew Bean, Helen Tocci and AnnaMaria Tocci, and their spouses; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur in April 1985; and her three brothers.
