The Federal Aviation Administration issued a Feb. 13, 2001 airworthiness directive noting the failure of battery switches in the Cessna 525 CitationJet 1. According to the directive, the failure could make it impossible for a pilot to switch to emergency power mid-flight, or to disconnect an overheating main battery. The FAA required pilots to replace the faulty switch.
Symons’ plane had been given an FAA airworthiness certificate as of May 2001, however. Symons registered her ownership of the plane as of May 2003.
