CANTON – A fire between a wall and chimney destroyed a garage at 20 Pinewoods Road Saturday afternoon, Assistant Fire Chief Mark Blanchette said.

The home’s occupant, who doesn’t own the property and whom Blanchette did not name, saw the flames and tried to put the fire out with his hands, Blanchette said. “He burned his hands.”

The man got one vehicle out of the garage before it erupted in flames, but a car, a “brand new ATV” and a riding lawnmower were all still inside, and burning, when Canton fire fighters arrived.

The garage was fully engulfed in flames and had partially collapsed when members of the Canton Fire Department arrived, Blanchette said. The call came at around 2:30 Saturday afternoon. “We foamed the…house, because the vinyl siding was melting,” he said. “Then we turned our focus on (the garage).”

Fire fighters and equipment from Peru, Dixfield, Turner and Livermore assisted the Canton department.
