FRYEBURG – Lisbon’s depth made the difference as the Greyhounds rallied to score 152 points Saturday and won the Mid-State League wrestling championships by six points over Dirigo.

Greyhound senior Cam Bubar provided the clincher by decisioning Josh Palmer 6-4 to win the 160-pound crown.

Lisbon had set itself up, but it required Bubar’s stunning upset for the eventual final tally.

“Experience did it today,” Bubar said. “Thats why we needed to work so hard during the season, so we are well-prepared for tournaments like this. I knew he had a good double-leg takedowns, so I kept my hands up and blocked him.”

Dirigo who won the MSL last year, and were led by champions Derek Daley (135) and Jon Smith (145). The Cougars led early on and roared back, but ultimately fell short

“We had some surprises,” Dirigo coach Doug Gilbert said.

“Some kids wrestled above their seeds, but we also had disappointments. Still, we had a chance entering the finals.”

Lisbon had taken a 25-point lead when seven individuals won semifinal matches. They included Forrest Cornell (103), Joel Pomerleau (112), Matt Nicholson (119), Kyle Huston, Bubar, Art Stambach (171) and Joe Doughty at 215.

“That was a big round for us,” Lisbon coach Mark Stevens said. “But it was also a nail-bitter with a one point and one in overtime. I knew it wasn’t over by any means.”

Doughty had escaped with 11 seconds left to beat Adam Getchell of Dirigo in triple overtime.

Mountain Valley finished third with 133 points and had a trio of champs – Ernie Matthews (130), Derek Sicotte (140) and Taylor Bradley (152).

Matthews secured a tight spladle to pin Mike Danforth of Monmouth, and Bradley stuck Huston.

“I had beaten him last year, but you never know how another kid will be from one season to the next,” Matthews said.

“My teammate Josh Thornton had beat (Danforth) earlier this season, and I practiced with him, so I was confident.”

Sicotte beat Ryan Vartainian of Wells, 7-4, and was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

“I knew I wouldn’t be lucky enough to catch him (pin) like last week,” Sicotte said. “I only led 4-3 entering the third period, so I knew that I needed to kick it in gear. This was an emotional day because my grandfather passed away this morning, but he would have wanted me here.”

The arch-rivals traded barbs in the conference finals for thirds. The Falcons’ Ryan Burgess stuck Dylan Castonguay at 112, but the Cougars Brett Staples decisioned Cody Magoon (4-0) at 119

Derek Daley won by technical fall. Smith was too aggressive for Alex Hymanson of York.

“We started out slow,” Mountain Valley coach Gary Dolloff said. “But we finished strong, going from fifth to third and set ourselves up for next week.”

Fryeburg’s Jesse Sawin won a title at 285.
