AUGUSTA – The Maine State Museum will present One For the Wood Heap Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, featuring activities to combat cabin fever blues.

Activities will include tours of the At Home in Maine exhibit and “Warm Tales for the Maine Winter,” presented by Maine humorist Gary Crocker.

Admission will be free for visitors contributing a piece of cut and split stove-length wood, to create the woodpiles in two areas of the At Home in Maine exhibit.

The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults; $1 for senior adults over age 62 and children ages 6 to 18; children under 6 free. Seeking heroes

BANGOR – As part of Unicel’s commitment to being part of the communities it serves, the company will recognize outstanding high school students who have served their communities by volunteering.

Unicel has created the “High School Heroes” program to celebrate high school seniors who give their time and talents to improve the lives of others. Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 will be awarded to students at the end of the 2008 school year.

High school seniors may nominate themselves or family members, teachers, mentors or friends may nominate a student. Nomination forms can be picked up at any Unicel store, or downloaded from the company’s Web site, www.unicel.com/scholarships. The nomination deadline is March 31. Farmers’ market

AUGUSTA – The Farmers’ Market at Mill Park is accepting applications for new membership. It is anticipated there will be a few vacancies available to fill out the 20 vendor slots. Applications are available through the Augusta Community Services Department. Applications must be returned on or before Friday, Feb. 29.

There will be a meeting of the current membership at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in the Augusta City Center Lecture Hall to review applications and to interview prospective members. New members must be present to be considered.

Block grant

PORTLAND – Through a Social Service Block Grant, Maine received a supplemental appropriation to provide continued services to residents displaced by the Gulf of Mexico hurricanes in 2005.

Catholic Charities Maine is administering the grant and is seeking to identify those affected and still in need of services. The funds will pay for eligible services on a first-come, first-served basis.

The types of services covered include counseling, transportation, education and training, employment services, health related services, housing and other needs.

Potentially eligible victims of the hurricanes may call Catholic Charities Maine at 1-800-781-8550 and speak with either Bonnie Bagley or Brenda Macomber.
