FARMINGTON – Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for compost bins.
Rosetta Thompson, district manager, said composting is a way to protect water from unnecessary run-off and enhance the quality of soil. All soils can be improved by adding compost, she said.
The 30-inch-by-35-inch bins, a wingdigger to make turning easier and kitchen scrap pail are available for $75 plus tax. Orders must be received before April 11 for a May 12 pick-up date at the USDA Service Center, 107 Park St.
“It’s a great investment for you to do your part for Earth Day, 08,” she said. “It also would make a great gift for mom or dad.”
Compost is also ideal to use when planting shrubs and trees available through FCSWCD. Shrub brochures are available, and orders are encouraged prior to March 1 to make sure most varieties are still available. The shrub pick-up date is 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, March 9, at the barn behind the USDA Service Center.
For more information about the shrub sale or compost bins, contact the district at [email protected], or call 778-4279 and ask for Rosetta or BJ.
