AUBURN – March trials are scheduled for two people charged in connection with a Poland car crash that killed six people in December 2006.
An Androscoggin County grand jury indicted Ryan M. Brissette, 28, of 168 Main St., Poland, who apparently hosted a party the night before the early-morning crash on Dec. 24, 2006. Law enforcement investigators said Brissette allowed a group of at least 10 people under legal drinking age – including one of the drivers in the crash – to consume alcohol at his home that night.
Brissette was charged with one count of allowing a minor to consume or possess liquor, a misdemeanor. If convicted, he faces up to a year in jail.
He was released on $1,000 unsecured bond on condition that he refrain from excessive use of alcohol.
His driving record includes convictions for drunken driving as well as driving with a suspended license.
Samantha Renee Montana also was charged in connection with the accident.
Montana, 20, of 48 Wood St., Lewiston, was charged with permitting unlawful use of her car, a green 2002 Nissan Altima sedan. Police said Montana handed Michael Cournoyer the keys to her car shortly before he drove away and crashed.
The misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to six months in jail. She was released on personal recognizance and ordered not to possess or consume alcohol.
Assistant District Attorney Deborah Cashman said Monday that plea negotiations with both defendants were ongoing.
Montana’s car slid across the center line of Route 122 on Christmas eve, colliding head-on with another car.
Reports later revealed that Cournoyer, the driver of her car, which carried three passengers, was operating with a suspended license and was intoxicated.
Cournoyer, 20, of Auburn was driving home from the Poland party, police said. His alcohol level was .14 percent, nearly twice the legal limit, according to toxicology reports.
The driver of the other car, Steven R. Walton, 27, of Poland, had no trace of alcohol in his blood, reports showed.
Cournoyer was killed in the crash. So were his passengers: Jacob Richard Roy, 20; Matthew P. Manley, 18; and Robert Bruce, 19.
Walton was traveling with Laura L. Caron, 25, of Poland. They were both killed, too.
