LEWISTON – Free tax preparation will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St.

The service will be provided by the Lewiston-Auburn Tax Credit Awareness Coalition. IRS-certified volunteers will be on hand to prepare 2007 federal and state income tax returns. Appointments are encouraged by calling 513-3160; TTY/TDD 513-3007, although walk-ins will be accommodated as time permits.

Somali and Spanish interpreters will be provided and “asset-building coaches” will be available to discuss financial topics such as establishing a checking or savings account, credit card debt management, understanding a credit report, budgeting or purchasing a home.

The Super Refund Saturday initiative is part of the Lewiston-Auburn Tax Credit Awareness Coalition’s annual advocacy of the Earned Income Tax Credit, a federal benefit for low- and moderate-income workers.

Since the 2004 tax season, the coalition’s efforts have returned more than $3.8 million to the pockets of local taxpayers. This year’s EITC tax credit for eligible workers can be as high as $4,716.

Additional information on the coalition’s EITC outreach for the 2008 tax season can be found on the city of Lewiston’s Web site: www.ci.lewiston.me.us; go to “Special Notices” and click on “Take the Money; You’ve Earned It” link.
