PORTLAND – U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, will speak at Bates College today to drum up support for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the campaign’s Maine communication director said.

Kennedy will speak at the Bates Chapel on College Street at 2 p.m. Kennedy is scheduled to speak for 45 minutes.

“He’ll be talking about why he believes at this critical moment Obama is the candidate we need to lead America,” communication director Reid Cherlin said. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are not needed, but people are encouraged to arrive early, Cherlin said.

Kennedy will also speak at the Portland Senior Center today.
