NORWAY – George C. “KA4UOK” Byrd, 86, of Norway died Thursday, Feb. 7, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in New York City on Feb. 14, 1921, the son of Clifford and Alice Nichols Byrd. He attended school in New York City and faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific, where he flew gliders.

After his marriage to Ann Charlotte Quinn on Jan. 6, 1949, the family lived in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., for 26 years, where he was employed at General Motors in Tarrytown, N.Y., for 27 years as an assembly line worker.

He was an amateur radio operator, his radio handle was “KA4UOK.” He was also a locksmith. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf and he was an avid bowler. He was a self-taught musician, playing the organ, clarinet and harmonica. In his younger years, he was a member of the CCC.

He is survived by his daughters, Laura Byrd Lennox of Millersburg, Pa., Leslie-Ann Byrd of Norway, Linda Byrd Shomper of Millersburg, Pa., and Lois Dorothy Byrd of Meridan, Idaho.

He was predeceased by his wife Jan. 30, 1995; and two sisters, Dorothy and Carol.
