Kennel club

SABATTUS – A meeting will be held for the members and prospective members of the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Sabattus Town Hall. There will be a potluck dinner, and committees and jobs for the club’s Sept. 27 and 28 championship dog shows will be on the agenda.

The show will be an all-breed event both days and the Sunday show will add obedience classes. All those interested in helping or joining the group should attend the meeting or call 777-1928 The Topsham Fairgrounds will be the site of the shows.

Valentine program

AUBURN – Philip D. House will entertain members of the Woman’s Literary Union with love songs on the grand piano on Thursday, Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. House is well known for his repertoire of musical selections.

The business meeting will convene at 2 p.m. at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St. President Evelyn Larrabee will bring members up to date on the plans for the Mother/Daughter/Doll Tea to be held on April 26.

The monthly meetings of WLU are open to the public.

To confer degree

WALES – Webster Lodge 164, AF and AM, will hold a special communication on Thursday, Feb. 14, to confer the Entered Apprentice Degree on one candidate. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Wales Grange and Masonic Hall, 322 Centre Road.

A potluck supper will be held at 6:30 p.m. All regular Masons are invited.

OES to meet

AUBURN – Pine Cone Chapter 26, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St. The chapter will honor OES families.

The chapter is making love bags to be donated to shelters for abused women and children in the Auburn-Lewiston area. Members can bring in items or make a donation to buy items to go into the bags.

The traveling emblem for District 4 is at Pine Cone Chapter. The meeting will be preceded by a potluck supper at 6:15 p.m. All Eastern Star members are welcome.

Dube to speak

LEWISTON – The Holy Cross Seniors will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in the church hall. Rita Dube, executive director of the Franco-American Heritage Center, will be the speaker.

Her topic will be on the mission of preserving the Franco heritage and the events in the coming months. All seniors of the area are invited. A social time will follow and a light lunch will be served.

Society program

POLAND – The Poland Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Old Schoolhouse, 1229 Maine St., next to the Poland Town Office.

Before the business meeting, Don Perkins of Raymond will speak on old barns in the area. Refreshments will be served after the talk. The public is invited.

Valentine dance

TURNER – The Rockin’ Roadrunners Band will play at a Valentine Day Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Boofy Quimby Hall. Tickets are $10 a person and will be sold at the door. The event is being sponsored by the Streaked Mountaineers Snowmobile Club.

Society speaker

NEW GLOUCESTER – Ed True will speak about the old schoolhouses of New Gloucester at the Thursday, Feb. 21, meeting of the New Gloucester Historical Society.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, next to the Town Hall, on Route 231. Refreshments will be served. A business meeting will end the evening.

True is a lifelong resident of New Gloucester and is a graduate of New Gloucester High School. All are invited.

Screenings set

SABATTUS – Life Line Screening will screen for risk of stroke and osteoporosis on Thursday, Feb. 28, at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 65 High St. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m.

Screenings are non-invasive and help identify potential health problems such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk will also be offered for men and women.

A wellness package will also include a heart rhythm for $149. All five screenings take 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

Baby-sitting

LEWISTON – The Bates College women’s hockey team is offering baby-sitting from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Drop-off/pick-up will be in the basement of Chase Hall at Bates College.

There will be a flat rate of $20 for four hours and $10 for each additional child in the family. Crafts, games and snacks will be provided, but children need to eat dinner before arriving. Spaces are limited; contact Anne Mueller at [email protected] or leave a message at 753-4420 to reserve a spot.

The team is raising money to go to the nationals in Chicago.
