Auburn – Harlan E. “Mac” McKenney, 85, of 26 Fairview Drive, Lisbon, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 9, surrounded by his loving family at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
He was born in Monmouth on May 27, 1922, the son of Alton F. and L. Susie Carr McKenney. He grew up in Monmouth and was known as “Bud” as a youngster and was educated in Monmouth schools and graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1940. Bud started his firefighting career in Monmouth at the age of 15 as a volunteer firefighter. He was married to Pauline A. Libby on Nov. 7, 1942, and served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He left the Monmouth Fire Department as a chaplain and was then employed 25 years as a firefighter with the Auburn Fire Department, retiring in 1987 as a lieutenant. Mac then worked as senior toll collector for the Maine Turnpike Authority at the former Exit 13 in Lewiston.
He was a member of the Lisbon Free Baptist Church where he had served as assistant pastor. He was also a life member of the VFW Post 9459 in Lisbon, and the DAV Chapter 11 in Lewiston. He enjoyed golf as a hobby.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline of Lisbon; five daughters, Sue Francoeur and husband, Richard, of Auburn, Gail Stretton and husband, Richard, of South Waterford, Jeanne Wood and husband, Edward, of Portsmouth, R.I., Carol Bannister and husband, Richard, of Lewiston and Beth Jones and husband, Carl, of Monmouth; two sons, David McKenney and wife, Ann, of Lewiston and Neal McKenney and wife, Diane, of Poland; 16 grandchildren, Patrick Francoeur and Rosanne, Matthew McKenney and wife, Wendy, Dylan McKenney and wife, Beth, Donna Stretton and Scott, Jill Ladd, Genna Fernandes and husband, Kenneth, Breanna Burke and husband, Christopher, Tyler Wood and Valerie, Ryan McKenney and wife, Erica, Meagan McKenney, Carissa Kauwell and husband, Charles, Jason Bannister and wife, Danielle, Carla Jamison and husband, Brian, Sarah Jones, Holly Matthews and husband, Scott and Tina Lesslie and husband, Blake; 23 great-grandchildren; a nephew, James McKenney and wife, Karen, of Monmouth; and numerous cousins.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Judith; a great-grandson, Justin Burke; and a brother, Gordon.
The family wishes to thank the Androscoggin Home Health caregivers and the Hospice House staff for their excellent care and concern shown the family.
