Dear Sun Spots: The Woman’s Literary Union, 19 Elm St., Auburn, is planning its annual Mother/Daughter/Doll Tea for April 26. This event introduces young girls to the finery of sipping tea or punch and dainty pastries in the club’s mansion as Dorothy Darling Gatchell entertains with storytelling. The event is from 1 to 4 p.m., and the cost is $6 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.
Frequently during our fundraisers attendees inquire how to become a member. The WLU consists of three groups: the daytime group meets the second Thursday of the month at 2 p.m.; the After Dark group for working adults meets the third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.; and the Garden Club meets the third Thursday at 2 p.m., from September to May. Fundraisers throughout the year are the Winterberry Fair in November, Holiday Open House in December and the tea in April. These fundraisers enable WLU to maintain the clubhouse in its federal style as well as provide three $500 scholarships to high school graduates.
The WLU meeting place is the former home of Auburn shoe magnate Horatio G. Foss and is wife, Ella. Mrs. Foss survived her husband, and she was a member of WLU when meetings were held in what is now known as the former Edward Little House on Main Street in Auburn.
Ella bequeathed her lovely home to WLU. It is the intention of all members to maintain this building as an aesthetic landmark for the Twin Cities. Annual dues are $25 for basic; $10 for After Dark; and $6 for Garden Club $6. Anyone desiring to become a member may call WLU President Evelyn Larrabee 783-8355 for additional information. – Dot in Auburn.
Answer: To readers who’ve not attended this tea party, it’s a fun event for mother-daughter, grandmother-grandchild, aunt-niece, and other special females in a young girl’s life. Storytelling, pastries and tea and some one-on-one time with that special woman in your life.
Dear Sun Spots: Keep up your great work. It is much appreciated! Recently, you had inquires for latch hook materials. I have plenty to offer for a minimum price. I would prefer they were picked up because there is too much to ship. Contact 864-3392 or [email protected]. – Shirley, Rangeley.
Dear Sun Spots: Recently, in the Sun Spots section, there was a letter about getting rid of the moth ball smell in clothes. Do not wash the clothes first. Hang them out doors and get the smell out before washing. It worked for me. – Lynn, No Town.

The programs are a growing movement that strengthen the vital social networks of family, neighborhood, and community, building social capital while fostering self-sufficiency. The program is based on a cooperative system of reciprocity where members gain by giving as well as receiving. Members exchange services for Time Dollars, the currency of equality, where an hour’s worth of service earns one Time Dollar, regardless of the service. By engaging in the Time Dollar Bank, individual members and organizations invest in creating vibrant, energized communities throughout Maine, the US, and the world. – No Name, Lewiston.
