CANTON – Route 108 between Rumford and Livermore was shut down for several hours Monday after drifting snow created hazardous road conditions.
Trooper Kyle Tilsley of the Maine State Police said at least nine vehicles were involved in accidents or got stuck in the snow. “I lost count after awhile,” he said.
Tilsley said three cars struck each other in one incident and two cars collided in another.
“Several people were transported to the hospital, I believe four in total,” Tilsley said. He wasn’t able to confirm the number of people injured.
Tilsley said the accidents resulted in moderate damage to the vehicles involved.
Several vehicles also got stuck in snowdrifts. Some were able to get out, while others had to be towed. The first report of a stuck car came in at 3:50 a.m. Tilsley said most of the incidents occurred closer to 7 a.m.
At 6:40 a.m., Route 108 was closed for about a two-mile stretch from Route 140 to River Road. Traffic was diverted over Pinewoods Road. The highway reopened at 11:30 a.m. after the Maine Department of Transportation cleared the drifts from the road.
Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Canton and Peru fire departments, and MedCare Ambulance also responded to the scene.
North of there, Tilsley said open fields between Canton Point Road and a bridge over the Androscoggin River led to snow drifting over a section of Route 140. Although some vehicles became stuck, Tilsley said they were able to get out without assistance.
With more snow on the way, Tilsley advised drivers to use caution.
“The biggest advice would be travel at a prudent speed for the road conditions and by all means give yourself more than enough room between you and the vehicle in front of you,” he said.
