CANTON – Everett C. “Ike” Dawson, 92, of Harlow Hill Road, Mexico, died Sunday, Feb. 10, after a brief illness.
He was born in Rumford, on Jan. 18, 1916, a son of John and Alice (Roy) Dawson.
Ike was educated in Mexico schools and was a graduate of Mexico High School, Class of 1935. While in high school, he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track; and later played semipro football with the Witches in Lewiston. He attended St. Paul Prep School in Garden City, Long Island, N.Y.; and was active in many sports there. After school, he managed the A & P stores in Rumford and Mexico. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Ike and his brother Roy owned and operated a sporting goods store in Mexico; and was later employed as a paper maker at Boise Cascade for many years.
He was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Catholic Church, a member of the Rumford VFW and American Legion, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, gardening and landscape painting.
He had a love of carpentry and built his home in Mexico and his cottage at Roxbury Pond.
Ike loved hiking around the neighborhood greeting all the children and talking to all the dogs along the way.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Pauline Knauer Dawson of Mexico; a daughter, Sheila Hill and husband, Jimmy, of Longview, Texas; son, John Dawson of Peru; a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Law of Mexico; six grandchildren, Chris Gallant and wife, Tracey, of Liberty City, Texas, Dawn Maceda and husband, Michael, of Phillips, Kimberly Gallant of Longview, Texas, Brian Dawson and wife, Tanya, of Norridgewock, Eric Mulkern of Ohio, and Aaron Dawson of Mexico; 13 great-grandchildren, Lindsay Gallant Mersereau, Matthew Gallant, Abbie Gallant, Ethan Gallant, Madison and Abigail Dawson, Megan Mulkern, Ashley Mulkern, Bailey Mulkern, Merrill Maceda, Jeremy Maceda, Mitchell Maceda, and Carolyne Maceda; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Emile Dawson, Roy Dawson, Robert Dawson and John Dawson; and sisters, Eunice Murphy, Estelle Sabin and Janet Anderson.
