LEWISTON – St. Dom’s still hasn’t let off the gas pedal.

After taking care of arch-rival Lewiston over the weekend, the Saints scored four goals in the first period and then set the cruise control, earning a 6-2 win over Thornton Academy at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Monday.

“We wanted to keep the same level of intensity that we had in the Lewiston game,” St. Dom’s coach John Pleau said. “We kept that in the first period, and we never looked back.”

Senior defenseman and captain Codie Keene had a rare two-goal night for the Saints (10-8), Richard Paradis had a pair of goals, and Casey Parker had a goal and two assists as St. Dom’s peppered Thornton goalie Matt Roy with 43 shots.

“Our game plan was to come in and get as many shots as we could on net,” Keene said. “Get the puck to the point, get the shots in on net low and get the rebounds.”

Ironically enough, Keene’s goals both went high over Roy’s glove hand.

“On those, I saw so many people in the way low, so I went high, where I saw more room,” Keene said.

The Trojans didn’t even know what hit them in the opening period.

Keene floated one past Roy at 2:45, Simon Hebert struck two minutes later on a perfect feed from C.J. Bergeron, and Paradis did the same on a pass from Cam Brown at 7:36 to put the Saints ahead 3-0.

“Cross the red line, dump the puck in and go get it at full speed, that’s what we needed to do, and we didn’t do that,” Thornton coach Greg Cloutier said. “St. Dom’s came in hard. They had a big win on Saturday. They could have let down and they didn’t.”

The Trojans had a hard time getting anything generated through the center zone, and the Saints’ forechecking befuddled Thornton’s defensemen.

Later in the period, St. Dom’s added another off the stick of Casey Parker on a rebound to Roy’s left. Thornton finally broke through with 42 seconds to play in the opening frame when Justin Murphy banged in a rebound in front of keeper Max Wiley, who saw just six shots in the first 15 minutes.

“Our defensemen did a good job containing them to the outside,” Pleau said.

St. Dom’s continued the barrage in the second, letting 20 more shots go in Roy’s direction. This time, though, they got just one past him, another Keene wrister from the right point that floated into the top corner over Roy’s glove.

“We needed to keep the pressure on them,” Keene said. “We did that in the second.”

“In the second, we played well, and in the third, we played better, too,” Cloutier said.

The Trojans had plenty of chances in the third period, too, with the Saints spending the majority of the period in the penalty box.

“I think, after all of the emotions of Saturday and then after the first period, we got a bit tired and started using our sticks instead of our legs,” Pleau said.

The Saints’ penalty-killing unit did the trick, though, killing off four Thornton power plays – including two stretches at 5-on-3.

Following the Saints’ penalty troubles, Paradis knocked his second goal of the game home past Roy to make it 6-1 in favor of the home team. Thornton’s Zach Ouellette added a goal with 23 seconds to play in the game to cap the scoring.

St. Dom’s concludes the season with games against Cheverus and Edward Little, while Thornton will face Scarborough, Kennebunk and Falmouth to close out its campaign.
