LEWISTON – If school is called off today because of another winter storm – this one is supposed to dump as much as a foot of snow – it’s storm day No. 7 for Lewiston-Auburn schools.

Lewiston Superintendent Leon Levesque said it would be the highest number of school cancellations he’s seen in his 10 years on the job. “This is an old-fashioned winter. We’ve not experienced this for some time.”

No school today would mean classes through June 20, Levesque said.

For Turner area schools, it’s worse: As of Tuesday, they’ve had 10 storm days.

“That’s a very high number,” said Leavitt Area High School Assistant Principal Wendy Harvey. “There’s been more snow than I remember in the past.”

She said school officials hadn’t decided whether they’ll add Saturdays to the calendar or keep school in session until late June.

In Lisbon, a school cancellation today would make six storm days. If that number holds, classes will continue until June 23.

Union 29 schools (Poland, Mechanic Falls and Minot) also have had five storm cancellations as of Tuesday. Today would be six, said School Union 29 Superintendent Dennis Duquette.

Still in his first year as superintendent, he doesn’t like making the call on whether to close schools. “I don’t sleep the night before making the call,” he said. And after making it, “I say, ‘OK, someone else please cancel,’ ” he joked.

Union 29 schools are scheduled to get out June 17, but no school today could make that June 18. The school board would have to decide whether to postpone teacher workshop days or keep students in school later than June 17, Duquette said.
