AUBURN – Philip James Abbott left this mortal life on Feb. 7 in Auburn.

He was born in Lewiston on May 6, 1958. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1978. Squire Edward Little was Philip’s great-great-great-grandfather. Philip was a 1980 graduate of Bowdoin College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history.

After college, he served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant for four years from 1980 to 1984. For most of that time, he was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. After his naval service, he received a master’s degree in teaching from the University of Southern Maine and was a high school history teacher and track coach in Eastport.

He then ran a store in Eastport, specializing in hunting equipment for three years. He worked briefly at Bates College as an acquisitions librarian and subsequently earned a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University in 1989. He was a cataloguer and automation consultant at Plymouth College from 1989 to 1993.

He then worked for the New Hampshire Historical Society as a computer librarian for more than 10 years. While he was there, he planned and implemented a complete modernization of the computer and archiving system. After leaving the historical society to live in his chosen state of Maine, he took excellent care of family members and family business. He was an intelligent and kind human being with a dry sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He leaves his mother, Maude Abbott; three siblings, Dallas Abbott, Pam Abbott and Ed Abbott; and a niece and nephew, Hannah and Joshua Menke.
