Franklin County high schools follow different procedures when it comes to students getting days off for personal use.

Jay High School gives most students one personal day each school year, with parental permission, to take care of what they need to do that may fall outside the state’s attendance guidelines for excused absences, such as sickness, religious holidays, family trips or educational leaves.

Jay seniors also have privileges granted for maintaining a B average with no grade below a C, assistant Principal Kenric Charles said Tuesday.

Juniors and sophomores get an additional personal day to compensate them for taking state-required SATs and PSATs, respectively, on a Saturday, Charles said.

Students lead busy lives with school, work, athletics and other activities and sometimes need a day off, but it’s with parents’ permission, he stressed.

Livermore Falls High School doesn’t offer a personal day to students, other than granting excused absences that fall within state guidelines. Juniors do get a compensation day for taking the SATs on a Saturday, Principal Shawn Lambert said.

“I can certainly see my students getting wicked excited about that if they were offered one,” Lambert said of a personal day off.

Assistant Principal Randy Cook said Mt. Blue High School in Farmington doesn’t offer personal days but does have a process where students may get a day or more off if they meet state guidelines and have parents’ permission.

They have a green slip and blue slip system.

Students may receive a green slip to be excused for a day or more for a family-related situation such as a trip or farming day such as a 4-H meet or attendance at a fair as long as they are passing their grades, Cook said.

A blue slip is for school-related absences such as a college trip, and students have to be passing all classes, he said.

Juniors get compensated for having to take SATs on a Saturday, Cook said, and last year staff took the class to Range Pond in Poland for a day.

Union 37 Superintendent Phil Richardson said the Rangeley school does not offer personal student days but does allow sophomores, juniors and seniors a day to visit a school or college, which are excused absences.

The school also has senior privileges if students are on the honor roll, he said.
