DIXFIELD – No. 2 Turner pulled off a convincing upset in the Western Maine Youth Basketball League boys’ championship game Sunday, routing No. 1 Oxford Hills, 40-19.

Levi Morin scored 12 points to lead the champions. Nate Coombs added eight. Forrest Stearns paced Oxford Hills with 13, followed by five from Jonah Williams.

Turner won all three of its games in the tournament by 20 points or more. Tylon Crockett topped the balanced attack with 10 points in a 43-21 semifinal victory over Dixfield. Matt Powell poured in six. Nick St. Germain directed Dixfield with nine points, while Tyler Frost, Dylan Kidder and Brian Volkernick each added three.

Powell produced 15 and Crockett chalked up 14 in the quarterfinals, lifting Turner to a 52-30 victory over Maranacook. Richard Hall scored 11 for the Readfield gang, with Taylor Wilbur contributing seven.

Oxford Hills reached the title game with a thrilling 51-49 victory over Auburn Rec. Nick Dyer scored 15 and Quinn Newton 12 for OH. Tyler Cabral led Auburn with 14. Brady Innes had 10.

Williams (10 points) and Newton (nine) steered Oxford Hills to an easy first-round win over Wilton. Evan Backus bolstered Wilton with eight points, backed by Brad Dwinal with four.

In other quarterfinal action, No. 5 Auburn Rec impressively turned the tables on No. 4 Messalonskee, 57-37. Innes led the way with 13 points, while Caleb Spruill and Brandon Bennett each rolled up 10. Jake Smith headed the Oakland attack with 13 points, and Ryan Erskine mustered eight.

No. 3 Dixfield also dispatched No. 6 Farmington behind 16 points from Kidder and 12 from Volkernick. Cam Abbot fueled Farmington with 18. Kindle Bonsall added 11. Maranacook and Wilton won preliminary games by forfeit over Mountain Valley and Monmouth.

Oakland captures girls’ crown

Oakland defeated Lake Region Gold, 25-23, in the WMYBL girls’ championship game. It was a close game with the teams exchanging the lead several times until the final horn. Grenier and Michaud combined for 14 points for Oakland, while Tiana Carter scored 16 points for Lake Region. Lake Region Blue defeated Turner in the third-place game, 37-22. Abby Maker led Blue with 24 points. Dow directed the charge for Turner with five points.
