LEWISTON – There’s nothing like meeting an old rival to renew your competitive fire.

Just ask the Lewiston Blue Devils.

After dropping three of four, and, according to the coaching staff, looking complacent at times, the Blue Devils and their revamped lines took it to Edward Little on Thursday, pounding out an 11-0 win against their cross-river rivals at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“They really played with the intensity I wanted to see from them,” Lewiston coach Norm Gagne said.

Jon Roy completed his hat trick in the second period on his way to a four-goal night, Sam Cloutier notched his hat trick entirely in the third period and Robbie Leeman potted a pair of goals in the final frame for the Devils, who have likely sewn up the No. 1 seed going into next week’s playoffs with one game remaining. Lewiston’s revamped lines may be a big reason why.

“We needed something different,” Gagne said. “I told the boys I should have done this before, when we were stale. We did it in practice, and it looked really good.”

Casey Poussard and Jake Brown also scored for the 15-3-1 Devils.

After a blazing start to the season, Lewiston hit a rough patch. A loss to Bangor ended their bid for an undefeated campaign, a loss to St. Dom’s hurt a bit more, and then, despite outshooting Brunswick 27-7, the Devils lost 1-0 in overtime.

There would be no such scoring drought Thursday. Poussard scored 51 seconds into the game on a rebound in front of EL’s Adam Loudermilk. Roy added another at 2:27, and a third at 5:22.

“We got scoring across the board, too,” Gagne said. “That’s what I was looking for tonight.”

The Eddies (5-13-0) got a solid effort from Loudermilk (48 saves), and had a few opportunities of their own, especially on their four power plays.

“(Loudermilk) was incredible,” Gagne said.

“Our goaltender played great,” EL coach Craig Latuscha said. “A good hockey team is going to capitalize on mistakes, and we made too many mistakes out there tonight.”

Lewiston’s defense played tough at even strength, though, and limited the Eddies’ chances to the outside.

Jake Brown made it 4-0 Lewiston in the second on a give-and-go with Leeman, and Roy earned his hat trick at 10:42 of the middle frame.

In the third, Cloutier and Leeman added to the Devils’ goal total with a pair from in tight.

Edward Little caps its season with games against St. Dom’s and Portland, while Lewiston faces Waterville in its season finale Monday.
