As a parent of a student at Poland Regional High School, I was excited to see an article in the Sun Journal on Feb. 10 regarding girls from the school winning first place in their division in the cheerleading competition. But, I was very disappointed to see a large picture directly above the article of the 4th place winners from Lewiston, and a picture beside it of a team from Rangeley who were simply in the competition.

As the saying goes, “Pictures speak louder than words.”

The girls from Poland certainly deserved a picture of their own above their article, and would have been ecstatic to see that in the local paper. Why does that happen?

I have seen it before with different sporting events where a team doesn’t get the proper credit for a great win.

Just because the Lewiston girls were in the competition, doesn’t merit the same or more recognition than the 1st-place girls from a small town.
