On Feb. 7, Lawrence Davis wrote that Mountain Valley sports teams go to the playoffs every year because they are a Class B school playing Class C teams.
The real reason that happens is because the parents of those kids (my generation) have set up feeder programs where the children are introduced to sports at a young age. My sons, for instance, have wrestled since kindergarten, and also played basketball, football and soccer at a young age.
They attend Dirigo, a Class C school, and on occasion have beaten Mountain Valley, due in part to having played alongside and competed with those kids early on.
Both schools are in the MVC, which is largely made up of Class C teams. That is sometimes a hindrance with their Heal points, because a team gets rated better if it plays more Class B teams. Sometimes a team won’t meet the best teams until the playoffs.
The schools are classified according to their enrollment, and Mountain Valley, which was merged from Mexico High School and Rumford High School, is a very small Class B school.
As long as the parents and faculty of those kids keep putting in countless hours of their time to mold them, they will continue to be successful in sports.
Congratulations to Mountain Valley and Dirigo for their recent Western Regional wrestling victories.
