• PARIS – The water works of this village are frozen up and the town is at the present time in a serious condition as far as protection against fire is concerned, especially in the residential section. Five hydrants are completely frozen up, three of them in one section of the town.

• PROVINCETOWN, Mass. – The effort of Massachusetts to keep its 500 acres of sand on Cape Cod, known as Province Lands, from being blown into the sea by binding the surface down through the planting of grass, shrubs, and trees is nearly completed, and it is expected the remaining 170 acres will be reclaimed within the next three years.

The Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow in Anson Academy, North Anson, is Miss Darlene Dunbar. She received the highest score in a written examination on homemaking knowledge and attitudes, administered Dec. 3, to senior girls in her graduating class. Her examination paper will be entered in competition to name this state’s candidate for the title of All-American Homemaker of Tomorrow and will also be considered for the runner-up award in the state. For her achievement, she will receive an award pin.

25 years ago, 1983

• Responding to lower-than-average scores on a number of tests administered to Auburn schoolchildren, physical education personnel plan to ask parents to become involved in their child’s fitness.

• The textbook lies flat on a student’s desk. It arrived early that morning in a bundle and may be torn apart later in the day. The text will be read, clipped, pasted, folded and painted on before the student is finished. The cost per pupil for this many-faceted textbook is 15 cents. The text is the newspaper and many believe that with a proper and early introduction students will continue “to use” newspapers as adults. Feb. 14 through 18 is Newspaper in Education Week.
