PARIS – The town is looking for five residents to fill out a committee that will review a controversial subdivision ordinance.
The ordinance, which sets the guidelines for proposed subdivisions and passed at last year’s municipal elections in a 487-468 vote, updated an ordinance which had not been changed since 1976. On Jan. 14, resident Ron Fitts approached the board with a request for review by the selectmen of eight areas of the ordinance.
Fitts’ concerns included a private gravel road, the role of the Board of Appeals and code enforcement officer, and the definition of a minor subdivision. Fitts also requested a review of the back lot ordinance, which provides for the improvement of back lots with acceptable rights of ways.
Selectmen voted to send the issue to the Planning Board on Feb. 12. However, the issue returned on Jan. 28, when Selectman David Ivey requested that discussion of an ad hoc committee to review the ordinance be placed on the agenda.
Selectman Raymond Glover said selectmen voted 3-2 to create such a committee. He said the committee will consist of the Planning Board and five residents, who will be appointed by the board at its next meeting Feb. 25.
“It’s their task to report back to the selectmen recommendations of any actions to be taken,” Glover said of the committee.
Glover said any revisions will go before the town at either a special town meeting or the annual town meeting. He said depending on how the warrant is approved, each proposed change may appear as a separate article.
Volunteer forms are available at the town office. According to the town’s Web site, the deadline to apply is Feb. 22.
