PORTLAND (AP) – Maine’s clam flats are closed following this week’s heavy rains.

The Department of Marine Resources on Thursday announced a flood closure for the entire coast, from New Hampshire to Canada.

The closure was prompted by Wednesday’s heavy rains that carried sewage and contaminants into the ocean.

Water quality samples will be taken next week, but the clam flats aren’t expected to open before late next week.

Record rainfall was recorded across Maine on Wednesday, with Portland receiving more than 2.5 inches after 7.5 inches of snow had fallen.
