WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Harold C. Shackleton, 91, a longtime resident of Lewiston and Poland, died on Feb. 8, in Weymouth, Mass., after a short illness.
He and his wife Florence lived in Poland and Poland Spring for almost 35 years before moving to Marshfield, Mass., in 2004.
He was born in 1916, in North Providence, R.I., the son of Harry and Elizabeth Shackleton. In 1954, he moved to Lewiston to become the purchasing agent for Continental Mills. He later owned and operated Maine Alarm Services until 1987, when he retired.
His early love of flying and association with the Civil Air Patrol led him to serve as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He flew as a B-17 pilot with the 8th Air Command stationed in England. After being shot down while on a mission to Germany, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III. He took great pleasure in attending the biannual Stalag Luft III POW reunions held around the country during the past 30 years.
He joined Tranquil Lodge in Auburn in 1958, and rose through the chairs to become worshipful master in 1965, and a 32-degree Mason. He was a member and served as an officer in numerous other York Rite Masonic bodies.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Florence Ferguson Shackleton of Marshfield, Mass.; his daughters, Holly Kerr of Poland Spring and Lynne Ford of Marshfield, Mass.; his granddaughter, Michelle Demand Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his niece, Nancy Dager of Sunny Isles, Fla.; his grandniece, Heidi Williams of Guilford, N.H.; and her two children, Glen and Meaghan.
