FARMINGTON – The track at Mt. Blue High School may be covered in snow this week but plans for the June 2008 Relay for Life event there are under way.
Everyone is welcome to attend a winter get-together to learn about the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Franklin County, said organizer Colleen Bate on Monday.
A relay rally will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in Roberts Learning Center at the University of Maine at Farmington. The snow date is Feb. 27.
Last year the Relay for Life raised nearly $40,000 toward the fight against cancer, she said. The relay is scheduled for June 13 and 14 this year at the high school.
“The Monday meeting doesn’t require a commitment,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to learn a little more about what we can do and how to be involved. The big thing this year is to ‘get involved … fight back and celebrate our survivors.’ While remembering those we’ve lost, we fight back by doing and by donating.”
A presentation will be given Monday on plans and to get everyone started, she said. Registration materials or team captain packets will be available.
Those not interested in being a team captain are welcome to join a team, join the committee or donate time at the event, she said.
Last year, members of 19 teams took turns walking the track overnight. Events are held overnight to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps. A survivor’s lap is celebrated to honor people who have faced cancer and a luminaria ceremony is held to remember those lost to the disease.
