LISBON – An address mix-up resulted in a five-to-seven minute delay in getting to the scene of a garage fire at 205 Webster Road on Tuesday.
The 24- by 24-foot wood-frame building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, fire Chief P. Sean Galipeau said. The building was owned by Rick Gustus of Sabattus and rented by Richard Lewis Jr. and Kevin Gayton.
It was insured, and the loss was estimated at $15,000.
The chief said the blaze started when Lewis pulled the fuel filter off a vehicle and gasoline squirted onto a droplight and ignited.
The vehicle was destroyed, he said. Lewis had renters’ insurance.
The fire broke out shortly after noon, and firefighters cleared the scene at 3:15 p.m.
The chief said the initial 911 call reporting the fire was made on a cell phone. All 911 cell phone calls go to the Maine State Police barracks in Gray, which relays them to Androscoggin County dispatch, which relays them to Lisbon dispatch.
The 911 caller was a friend of Lewis’ but did not know the address, delaying the Fire Department’s response.
Galipeau’s advice: “You need to know the address you’re at if you’re using a cell phone.”
If not, he recommends people who are in Lisbon call 353-2500 directly for the local dispatch center.
