TEGA CAY, S.C. – Gordon K. Fairfield, 88, of 204 Dunn Road, Poland, died Friday, Feb. 15, at the home of his son, Richard.
He was born in Saco, Sept. 14, 1919, a son of the late Loring and Bertha Nason Fairfield, he graduated from Thornton Academy in 1938 and was married for 61 years to his high school sweetheart, Frances G. Day. She died Jan. 13, 2007.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Bronze Star and Silver Star prior to his honorable discharge in April 1953.
He worked for W.D. Matthews for 24 years, retiring as service manager in 1980. He then worked for Eastern Fire Protection, retiring in 2007.
He was a member of Tranquil Lodge 29 in Auburn for 43 years, was raised to the sublime degree of a master Mason in 1965, and served as master of the lodge in 1973.
He was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Auburn Suburban Little League field and was an avid gardener. He enjoyed growing flowers and berries. His other interests included woodworking, repairing small engines, hunting, fishing, camping and raising chickens with Karen, his “peaches and cream.”
He is survived by a daughter, Gail Poirier and companion, Jeff Therriault, of Poland; a son, Richard (Dick) Fairfield, and his wife, Barbara, of South Carolina; six grandchildren, Nathan Fairfield and Cindy, Matthew Fairfield and Dawn, Kathryn Corey and husband, Timmy, Kimberly Fairfield, Karen Files and fiancé, Andrew Logan, and John Files; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Fairfield.
