SOUTH PARIS – Eleanor Marjorie Kahkonen, 80, passed away peacefully at home with her son and daughter by her side, on Feb. 17. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Ellis Kahkonen in December 2007.

She was born on April 29, 1927, in Farmington and was the second of four sisters. She graduated from Maine School of Commerce (Auburn) with an associates degree in accounting, before marrying Ellis Kahkonen, in 1952. She worked outside the home, while also raising a family and eventually retired from Wilner Wood Products, after 26 years, in 1991.

She was an active member of the Oxford Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she served as church treasurer for many years. She and Ellis served for many years in the church’s community service outreach and enjoyed the friendship and fellowship of those she worshipped with.

She dedicated the last 11 years of her life as being the loving caregiver of her husband, Ellis at their home in South Paris. Her varied interests always took her heart to her children and grandchildren and her extended family.

She enjoyed traveling to visit her family, whether it was to Hong Kong, California, Ohio, or Washington, but always returned back to Maine, where she and her husband lived all their lives and the children and grandchildren always seemed to find their way home to during the summers.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Martti Kahkonen and daughter-in-law, Monique, of Miamisburg, Ohio; daughter, Margo Ferguson and son-in-law, John, of Battle Ground, Wash.; grandchildren, Mari and Greg Cheney of Lynnwood, Wash., Alicia Ferguson of Battle Ground, Wash., and Aaron Ferguson of Seattle, Wash.; her sisters, Eunice Hammond of Downey, Calif., Rowena Swain of Auburn and Ramona Russell of Wilton.

Her family is comforted knowing Nanny and Poppop will be reunited in heaven and will continue their love story there.
