• George W. Bent & Co. of Boston, the largest manufacturers of all kinds of goods in the general bedding line in New England, has purchased the business of the Lewiston Mattress Company. It has leased the Jordan Block at 103 Main Street, Auburn, and the entire upper part of the Haskell building which adjoins. The new factory will be made modern in every respect and will give employment to upwards of 40 hands.

• Creamed Chicken – A Lewiston lady’s recipe: Melt one tablespoon of butter, add one tablespoon of flour. Pour on slowly one cupful hot milk or cream, add one-half teaspoon salt, a salt spoon of pepper and one cupful of chicken meat cut in dice.

50 years ago, 1958

WILTON – An open house will be held by the G. H. Bass Company at the new factory Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. The new factory of the G. H. Bass Co. is located on the Weld Road. This is the first increase in the size of the plant since 1924.

NEW YORK – Americans bought nearly 58 million newspapers daily last year, 703,935 more than in the previous year, Editor and Publisher said today. The trade magazine said the gain was made despite the fact that many papers raised their prices, and there were six fewer dailies in 1957 than in the year before. The average price of a newspaper is now computed at close to 6 cents a copy.

25 years ago, 1983

PORTLAND – While the annual killing of hundreds of white-coated seal pups may be coming to end after a century, nearly 180,000 pelts will be taken this spring in the Maritime Provinces, according to the founder of the Sea Shepherd Society. The society’s 200-foot converter trawler, Sea Shepherd, docked in Portland on Saturday in preparation for a voyage to Newfoundland. “Our goal is to prevent the sealing fleet from leaving St. John’s and going to the nursery floes,” said Paul Watson, the Sea Shepherd’s 32-year-old captain.
