ARROWSIC (AP) – A 110-year-old lighthouse on the shore of the Kennebec River has a new keeper.
The Chewonki Foundation has signed a 15-year license with the U.S. Coast Guard for the right to use and restore Squirrel Point Light.
Chewonki Foundation president Don Hudson says his group will take an inventory this spring of what needs to be done to the property, located on a 4.5-acre parcel in Arrowsic.
Besides the light tower, the property has a keeper’s house, a boathouse, a fog signal building and a barn.
The lighthouse has been a source of dispute among different groups over the years, and has been in the federal government’s hands since 2005.
