ALBANY – Georgiana M. Hamel, or “Georgia,” as she was called by family and friends, died Feb. 20, at her home, with her family by her side.

She was born in Berlin, N.H., on Aug. 18, 1929, to William and Marianne (Caouette) Gaulin. She first started work as a “paper boy” when she was 13. She then worked at The Clinic as a medical assistant, a knitter at Wareknitters and assisted her mother-in-law at the family grocery store. She ran the family store while her husband attended college.

She also worked as a “cafeteria” lady at Kingswood High School in Wolfeboro, N.H., and at Oxford Hills High School in South Paris. She also co-owned and operated Georgia’s Dairy Bar in Bethel. After the sale of the snack bar, she became a nanny for a family in Pennsylvania and spent her time between Maine, Florida and Pennsylvania. Upon her full-time return to Maine, she was self-employed as a House of Lloyd salesperson, worked for the local IGA, the Census Bureau and finished her career as a Wal-Mart greeter.

Throughout her life, she gained strength from her religious beliefs. Because of this, she often reached out to the communities she lived in by offering food for the hungry, sponsoring youth attending Christian camp, volunteering as a cook or as a teacher at Bible study.

She loved fishing, ice fishing, gardening, knitting, baking, participating in local politics and spending time with her family and friends.

Hockey mom, taxi, disciplinarian, swimming coach, nurse, cook, baker, teacher, carpenter, wife, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and “Super Mom,” we thank you for gracing our lives with your love.

She is survived by Kenneth J. Hamel, her husband of nearly 60 years; four children, Kenneth P. Hamel and his wife, Valerie, of Albany, Phyllis Davis of Westbrook, Linda Smith of Albany and Keith Hamel and his wife, Marilyn, of Bethel; five siblings, Richard Gaulin and his wife, Clair, of Arizona, Cecile Nelson and her companion, Stan Belfante, of Berlin, N.H., Priscilla Gagne and her husband, Robert, of Berlin, N.H., Lillian Landry and her husband, Raymond, of Stark, N.H. and Jeanne Croteau and her husband, Lucien, of Berlin, N.H. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother of 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren; as well as an adoring aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Rose Sumner; and three brothers, Norman, Leo and Raymond Gaulin.
