LEWISTON – It wasn’t pretty, and it wasn’t exactly the way the Saints wanted to tune up for a quarterfinal meeting with Falmouth, but at least it got them there.
Simon Hebert finished off his hat trick in the third period – he finished with four goals – and Max Wiley made 16 saves to lead St. Dom’s to an 8-1 win over Westbrook in the teams’ Western Class A preliminary game at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday.
“We didn’t play our best,” St. Dom’s coach John Pleau admitted. “Still, we had a dominating game. There were a lot of good things. We attacked the net really well, and their goalie did a fantastic job. But it seemed like it was really hard for us to get up for it.”
No. 6 St. Dom’s (13-8-0) will travel to Falmouth on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. showdown with the No. 3 Yachtsmen at Family Ice Center. St. Dom’s lost a close game to Falmouth – 2-1 with the winner coming in the final five seconds – at the Colisee this season, and also lost in Falmouth, 4-0, two nights later.
“I don’t know what it is, but we get up to play the big teams,” Pleau said. “I like our chances against Falmouth the way we’ve been playing to finish out the season.”
Saturday’s game started slowly for the Saints. Westbrook shot out of the gate, meanwhile, getting the first three shots on Wiley.
“I think we surprised them a little bit,” Westbrook coach Travis Jalbert said. “The kids came out and gave a great effort.”
Jalbert knew all to well coming into Saturday’s game the playoff tradition associated with St. Dom’s – he played for the Saints, graduating in 2002.
“We knew what they can do in the playoffs,” Jalbert said. “I know it well, but we also couldn’t come in here and be scared to play them.”
The Saints responded the first chance they got, though. Hebert got his first on the Saints’ first power play, on a rebound after an Alexander Cornelio shot. Casey Parker made it 2-0 just 10 seconds later, on a nice give-and-go with Ben Randall.
But Westbrook wasn’t done.
The Blue Blazes (10-10-1) got one back at 8:16 of the first when Zach Souza batted a rebound past Wiley.
“Defensively, we just weren’t there early in the game,” Pleau said.
St. Dom’s got one more in the first from Hebert, one in the second from Daniel Lajoie, and then four in the third to put the game away.
Westbrook netminder Zach Joy made 53 saves in a losing effort as the Saints launched 61 shots in his direction.
