AUBURN – Knights of the Sun Chapter, Order of Demolay for Boys, held a special dinner and program on Feb. 15 at the Auburn Masonic Hall, Turner Street. The purpose was to raise money and awareness for autism and to honor the American flag.

Close to 50 people attended the event, which raised $167 for the Autism Society of Maine. Participating were members of Knights of the Sun Chapter and members of the Lewiston Assembly of Rainbow for Girls.

The program began with a history of the American flag, narrated by Junior Councilor Samuel Goldsberry of Lisbon. Each flag was presented to a musical accompaniment and was presented by a Rainbow Girl.

Flags included the Pine Tree Flag of 1775, the Snake Flag of 1776-1777, a flag bearing the red cross of St. George and the white cross of St. Andrew of 1775, the Grand Union Flag of 1777, the Fort McHenry Flag of 1812, the 20-star Flag of 1818, the 48-star flag, and today’s 50-star flag.

Following the flag presentation, a response was given by Master Councilor Andrew Cotterly of Poland. Cotterly paid tribute to the men and women who had fought to protect the nation’s flag – from the Revolutionary War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Cotterly also recognized the sacrifices made by soldiers in the field and veterans of wars throughout the years.

An inspirational reading was given by State Master Councilor Benjamin Weisner of New Gloucester. Weisner read “Remember Me?” an essay depicting the flag’s point of view toward Americanism today. Past Worthy Adviser Caitlin Walton of the Lewiston Rainbow Assembly then spoke on the importance of patriotism.

The service concluded with a tribute to the nation’s service men and women, past and present. The armed service songs were played, and those either serving or having served in the various armed services were asked to stand and be recognized. They were acknowledged with applause.

The Order of DeMolay opens doors for young men age 12 to 21 by developing civic awareness, personal responsibility and leadership skills. For more information about the Knights of the Sun Chapter or for information on joining, contact Jim Greenwood at 782-3967.
