Lewiston – Neal Eugene Hansen, 67, died Feb. 21, at Central Maine Medical Center after complications from heart surgery.
He was born in Portland to Hans M., Jr., and Gyda Uldall Hansen, both deceased. He attended Gray schools and graduated from Pennell Institute in 1959. Before serving in the Marines during the Vietnam War, he attended Capital University and the University of Southern Maine. After returning to Gray, he married Kimbalee Booth, also of Gray, in 1966.
He followed his brother Skip into teamster trucking after Hansen Farms, the family business, closed in the late 1960s. He retired from SuperValu in 2004 and became a driver for Community Concepts, Inc. in South Paris until his death. As a member of Amvets, he served as the department chaplain, and he was also in the Marine Corps League. He and his wife joined the American Legion and Auxiliary in Gray, where he served as chaplain, until they transferred to Norway. For the past few years, he has been helping returning soldiers.
Besides being active in his church, he enjoyed taking his grandsons, Daniel, Jr., and Jordan, to hockey practice and weekend games, plus their other activities. He had an extensive history and biblical book collection. Many of the volumes he had read more than once. He will be sadly missed by family, friends, the many clients he transported and by his cat, Tasha.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kim; son Erich and wife, Catherine, and his son Christopher; daughter-in-law Tara and sons, Daniel Jr. and Jordan; sister Priscilla and husband, John Pedersen, and their son, Anthony Pedersen and his fiance, Tammy Anderson; niece Heidi (Hansen) and husband, Matthew Western and children Ruby and Jonas; niece Vivika (Hansen) and husband, Gerard DeNegre, and children Noah, Grace, Christopher, and Sam; and nephew Fritz Hansen and wife, Margaret, and son Peter; and many cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, Daniel, Sr., and by his brother, Hans M. (Skip) and his wife, Dorothy.
