AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine adults would be allowed to have wine shipped to their homes if a bill up for legislative review Monday becomes law.
Sen. Lynn Bromley’s bill would allow direct-to-consumer sales of wine, as long as the recipient is an adult and registered with the state.
It’s the fourth time in the last few years such a bill has come before the Legislature. Bromley, a South Portland Democrat, says she has addressed concerns by state police that wine deliveries will open the door to underage drinking.
Bromley says someone 21 or older would have to sign for the wine at delivery. Supporters also say more than 30 other states allow wine to be shipped to people’s doorsteps.
The Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee is holding a hearing on the bill.
