Yes, there is a lot of traffic on Center Street in Auburn, but I don’t see how building several very costly roundabouts would improve the situation. Roundabouts are cumbersome and more confusing than traffic lights, which seem to me to be doing an adequate job.
Roundabouts would do nothing to reduce the amount of traffic, which is the main problem on Center Street, unless that caused many drivers to take different routes and shop elsewhere in order to avoid them. That wouldn’t bode well for businesses there.
If people think that Center Street traffic is bad, they should drive around in Boston for a week or so, then come back and take another look. They would realize that Center Street isn’t so bad after all.
I hardly think the disruption caused by the construction of the roundabouts would justify whatever questionable improvement they would create in traffic flow.
There’s such a thing as leaving well enough alone, especially when money is tight.
While I’m having my say, two questions about recycling in Auburn:
Why does a municipality the size of Auburn recycle only No. 2 plastic?
Why do so few people recycle?
Come on, people. It’s not that much of a bother.
