LEWISTON – A Lewiston man’s condition was upgraded to stable at Central Maine Medical Center on Monday where he’s being for treated stab wounds inflicted during an early morning fight.

Brandon Staples, 20, of 116 Bartlett St. was taken to the hospital after he was involved in a fight at 3:30 a.m. at Walnut and Bartlett streets, police said. A nursing supervisor said Monday night his condition had improved from fair to stable.

Police arrested Clayton Chapman, 18, of 171 Park St., Lewiston, on a charge of elevated aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing, Lt. Michael McGonagle said.

He said about a half-dozen people were gathered on the street corner during the fight, then fled. The fight reportedly was over a female known to both Staples and Chapman, McGonagle said.

No weapon was recovered. An investigation continues. Further charges could be filed, McGonagle said.

Chapman was booked into Androscoggin County Jail early Monday afternoon. Bail was set at $10,000.
