I’d like to commend the Sun Journal for the Feb. 17 articles on the profound impact of dementing diseases such as Alzheimer’s on Maine and its people.
As a nurse blessed to have the opportunity to care for those suffering from dementia, I found the articles informative, insightful, respectful and a shot of needed exposure for a low-key but indispensible organization like the Alzheimer’s Association.
I found the personal look into Mr.and Mrs. Raymond’s struggle with this terrible process especially poignant and touching. Mrs. Raymond is, as are other spouses of those with dementia, an example of true love and devotion, and a source of inspiration to all.
I would urge readers to at least visit the Alzheimer’s Association Web site and learn more about dementing illnesses and their impact on all levels of society. If anyone knows of someone struggling with dementia, whether as a sufferer or a loving caregiver, remember that the simple gift of a kind, understanding word can go a long way.
