AUGUSTA – An unemployed 35-year-old Augusta man was charged with murder Tuesday night in connection with last week’s slaying of an elderly woman in the same apartment building.

Raymond L. Clark of 20 State St. was arrested at his apartment at 8 p.m. Tuesday by state police detectives, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said. He was taken to the Kennebec County Jail and is expected to be arraigned in Kennebec County Superior Court today, he said.

Clark and the victim, Audrey Lou Benn, were residents in the same apartment building. Benn was found dead inside her basement apartment Friday evening. Clark lives on the first floor.

Police made the arrest after consulting with the Maine Attorney General’s Office throughout the day, McCausland said.

Police were not releasing any additional information Tuesday night.
