Hello/goodbye update: It turns out there are a lot more words besides “aloha” and “shalom” that mean both “hello” and “goodbye.” There’s “sawatdee” in Thai, “ciao” in Italian, “yasou” in Greek, and “szia” in Hungarian, which is pronounced “see ya!” And we’ve got one in English, too: “good day.”

Janice Moore, an administrative assistant from Schaumburg, Ill., bought something for less than $10 in a Sears store in 1966 that she recently sold for $8,000. What Ms. Moore bought “off the shelf” more than 40 years ago is today a rare and highly collectible:
