WEST PARIS – Leah S. Deegan, 81, of the Irish Neighborhood, Greenwood, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Ledgeview Living Center.
She was born in Bethel, May 23, 1926, the daughter of James Albert and Margureitta Young Spinney. She became a resident of Greenwood when she married Joseph P. Deegan in 1950. They made their home in the Irish Neighborhood and raised four children.
She has been active on the Greenwood Democratic committee and served many years as a ballot clerk, a member of the Greenwood 175th Birthday committee, a member of Franklin Grange for more than 50 years, and as a Locke Mills American Legion Auxiliary past president and member for more than 30 years.
She spent many years working in the kitchen at the Legion preparing food for suppers and the twice weekly bingo games. She was also instrumental in turning the Legion Hall into a shelter in case of emergency. She was a member of the Bethel Congregational Church, was an avid bingo player, enjoyed playing cards and shopping. Above all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Henry and his wife, Betty, of Cape Elizabeth; three daughters and their husbands, Sally and Ronald Smith of Greenwood, Joan and John Kimball of Albany Township and Kathryn and Hank Lessard of Palermo; her devoted sister, Mary Jane Gaudreau and her husband, Harold, of Bethel; 10 grandchildren, Marcus Deegan, Jennifer Robidoux, Julie Norrad, Koral Kimball, Eben Smith, Uljas Murphy, Jillian Kimball, James Kimball, Daniel Lessard, Marie Lessard; six great-grandchildren, Faith Deegan, Andre Robidoux, Kaitlin Norrad, Patrick Deegan, Brooklyn Kimball and Leah Kimball; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1992; and a sister, Marion Soule.
