LEWISTON – Howard Clinton Sedgley, 90, passed away Monday, Feb. 25, at Marshwood Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Bowdoinham on Feb. 2, 1918, the son of Pearl and Florence (Loon) Sedgley. He graduated from Brunswick High School and McCarrie School of Mechanical Dentistry in Philadelphia. He owned and operated Sedgley Dental Lab in Lewiston from 1932 to 2002.
He retired briefly in his 60s to enjoy winters in Florida and Arizona, but soon returned to Maine and the dental technician work he loved. He lived in Lewiston most of his adult life. He was a resident at Schooner Estates in Auburn from 2005 until his recent illness.
Although childhood polio limited the use of his right arm, he made many clever adaptations so he could pursue his interests. He loved the outdoors and spent many years hunting, fishing, rifle and skeet shooting with friends and his son-in-law Dean. He was a past commander of the American Legion Post 31 of Auburn, a Kora Shriner, and a member of several Masonic lodges.
He married D. Irene Harrison in 1942, and was a devoted husband during their 61 years of marriage. He was a loving father to his daughters and their husbands, and a wonderful grand-“Perky.” He was thrilled when his first great-grandchild Justin Reno was born in August, and loved his visits with his “grand-dog” Amy Croxford. He will always be remembered for his unconditional love, thoughtfulness and mischievous chuckle.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Althea and Dean Croxford of New Gloucester; daughter, Elaine Williams of Gray; granddaughter, Melinda Williams Reno, her husband, William, and great-grandson, Justin of Winchester, Mass.; and grandson, Derrick Williams of San Diego, Calif.
He was predeceased by his wife, Irene, in 2004; his sisters, Irma Allen and Beatrice Sandelin; and his son-in-law, Justin Williams.
His family would like to thank the staff at Schooner for their loving care of their father, and express their appreciation to Dr. Seth Gordon for the wonderful care he gave both their parents.
