FARMINGTON – Following their dream to own their own business, Cindy and Kevin Madore have reached their goal.

What was Maxwell’s Market in West Farmington is now Madore’s Market, and it will get a makeover this weekend. The store will close at noon today and more than 35 friends and family will help with an extensive renovation prior to the store’s reopening at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The venture is a family affair, with the couple joining daughter, Jody, and her fiance, Aaron Meader, to comprise half of the eight employees the pair expect to need.

Madore is no stranger to the world of small markets. She worked several years for Steve Jones, her mentor, and then for Rick Breau at Rick’s Market in Wilton.

The Madores started planning last year to purchase Maxwell’s Market and open it by Memorial Day. One issue after another slowed the process before the transaction papers were finally signed Monday.

After Cindy’s father, Paul DiStefano, died last year, Cindy decided to invest her inheritance, resign from her job at Rick’s Market, and follow the pair’s dream to be self-employed.

“It’s going to be a lot of work, but it’s gonna be fun,” she said.

The couple are not short on plans for the place. Along with renovating the space, putting up a new roof and vinyl siding, coordinating jobs for the summer, they want to convert the space to a market and lose the convenience-store image.

With plans to open at 6 a.m., booths will be added to provide a breakfast menu with homemade muffins and doughnuts. A deli with meats and ground hamburger will be available, as well as daily specials, fresh produce and vegetables.

Pizza and sandwiches remain on the menu along with items for eat in or take out, she said. Open 365 days a year, the store will offer catering and eventually home delivery.

The Madores also will continue to sell gas and run the bottle redemption center.

Daughter Jody also resigned from Rick’s Market, where she worked with her mother for the past three years.

While waiting to get into the store, the Madores have been planning Jody’s wedding, which will be held March 29, she said. She and Meader appreciate the closeness of family and friends, and have asked 21 people to join them on a trip to the Dominican Republic for their honeymoon.
