50 years ago, 1958

NEW YORK – Two more leading gasoline supplies – Esso Standard Oil Co. and Socony Mobil Oil Co. – will raise wholesale prices tomorrow in several eastern states. The move follows similar action early this week by Gulf Oil Corp. Socony gave these examples of old and new prices of its “regular” grade gasoline: The Boston price from 7.4 to 15.4 cents, and the Albany price from 15.4 to 15.9 cents.

WASHINGTON – The Senate tonight voted $732 million worth of postal rate increases. It then passed pay raises for 1,500,000 federal workers, totaling more than the new rate revenue. The pay hikes adopted for the postal workers would average 12½ per cent.

25 years ago, 1983

• The beers crossed the bar at Korean War-era prices; the gin tasted more like Rosie’s than anything distilled in the Swamp. Grape Nehi could be had for a dime. The location was a Lewiston restaurant, but the ambiance was pure government-issue when a crowd of about 50 wisecracking fans gathered to toast the final episode of M*A*S*H, broadcast Monday night in a 2½-hour special filled with laughter, tears and good-byes.

• Laine Hoffmeister of Auburn, a 37-year-old mother of two sons, a part-time registered nurse and a state champion canoe racer, won the Mrs. Maine America Pageant Sunday in the Eastland Hotel ballroom in Portland.
